Japanese scientists from the Jouhou System Kougaku laboratory at the University of Tokyo taught the humanoid robot Musashi to drive a car.
The robot’s head contains two movable cameras (one for each eye). With their help, the robot creates a high-quality picture of what is happening around. The cameras can pan and tilt, for example to make Musashi look into a mirror.
Using the robot, you can control the steering wheel, turn on the ignition and turn signals. He presses both feet on the gas and brake.
While driving, the robot was able to recognize a pedestrian and brake in front of him. But not everything is so smooth. Turns were given to him strictly and took much longer than an ordinary driver.
Scientists continue to refine the robot. The main advantage of this connection is that the car does not require cameras, lidars and other sensors and technologies for autonomous driving. Musashi can drive a regular car, essentially replacing the driver. [New Atlas]
