The App Store currently requires a Mac to have twice the amount of free space as the minimum initial app download. That is, if you want to install a 1GB app, your Mac must have at least 2GB of free space for the App Store to start downloading it.

Apple said that with macOS Sequoia this requirement is gone. Now you will need as much space as the actual size of the app, plus a small buffer.
