It doesn’t seem like such a crazy idea, especially considering the tendency of many people to walk around and live their lives at almost any time with headphones in their ears to listen to music or podcasts. And often, everything can happen around you without you realizing it.

That’s why, Spotify is currently testing a special emergency notification system in Sweden.

According to code references found in the Spotify app, the company is considering a system that would help distribute public announcements related to things like “accidents, serious events, or major service outages.”

The feature was first discovered by technologist and reverse engineer Chris Messina, who suggested that the emergency alerts service could prompt Spotify users to turn on notifications for their apps. Users often turn off notifications for non-essential apps, such as social media or entertainment apps, making it difficult for the app to grab users’ attention and promote its new features.

Code references in the Spotify app mention this feature in the following sentences:

  • “Emergency Alerts in Sweden”
  • “Receive emergency alerts”
  • “Important Public Announcement, IPA, is a system used to notify the public in Sweden in the event of accidents, serious events or major service disruptions.”
  • “For more information, visit the Swedish Contingencies Agency website”
