Qualcomm has unexpectedly filed a lawsuit against Transsion, the world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker. The reason is the alleged infringement of four “non-standard essential patents,” which are not indicated in the published data on the case. In particular, Transsion does not use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips in any of its current smartphones.

Qualcomm often sues smartphone market players using its mobile chips for infringement of its patent rights, Gizmochina recalls, but what is strange about this case is precisely that Transsion creates models based on MediaTek and Unisoc.
Transsion is currently considered the fourth largest smartphone manufacturer in the world after Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi (data from Statista), and experts believe that it was this growth of the company that attracted Qualcomm’s attention.
If Transsion is forced to pay licensing fees, this will affect the profitability of the company’s devices, which fall into the budget segment. The company is now involved in two more lawsuits: Philips and Nokia also sued Transsion for the same reason – the use of other people’s patented technologies.
A Transsion spokesperson responded to the allegations by saying the company has a “standard 5G patent licensing agreement” with Qualcomm and operates solely under that agreement.
