Previously, LANS could only be confirmed after death by analyzing brain tissue. Now, Mayo Clinic has used data from more than 200 participants from various research databases to create criteria that include age, degree of memory impairment, brain scan results and biomarkers that indicate specific protein deposits in the brain. This will allow neurologists to make more accurate diagnoses and perhaps tailor individual treatments for patients with memory loss that resembles Alzheimer’s disease but doesn’t have the pathology.
David T. Jones, lead author of the study, emphasizes that understanding LANS will allow for better symptom management and treatment decisions.
