YouTube started placing ads directly into the video stream a month and a half after the testing began. Ad blockers are now unable to skip them.

Reddit user OreOfChlorophyte showed how it works. When you open a video, an ad is shown for 6-20 seconds.

The Ublock Origin extension (one of the most popular for blocking ads) does not show the video itself. Instead, it displays a black screen that cannot be closed. To go to the video, you still have to wait for the ad to pass.

YouTube has not commented on the change. But on Thursday, Google said it was updating its “security standards for YouTube browser extensions.”

All of these changes are aimed at forcing users to either watch ads or pay for a YouTube Premium subscription that turns them off. But commenters on Reddit are in no rush to do either of those. Many users believe it’s better to watch on a black screen than to watch ads or pay to turn them off. [Android Authority]
