Here are some medications that should not be taken with coffee.

Medications for the thyroid glandStudies show that its absorption in the body will decrease when taken at the same time as coffee.

Cold and allergy medications. Coffee may increase anxiety and insomnia when taking these medications at the same time. Some anti-allergy medications, such as fexofenadine, should not be taken with coffee because they can overstimulate the central nervous system and increase anxiety symptoms.

Diabetes medicationsDrinking any caffeinated beverage, such as coffee, can increase your insulin and blood sugar levels.

Cure for Alzheimer’s diseaseAlzheimer’s medications, such as donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine, are affected by caffeine, so less of the medication reaches the brain than is needed.

Asthma medications. Most people with this condition take bronchodilators, such as aminophylline or theophylline, during flare-ups. Drinking coffee or other highly caffeinated beverages can increase your risk of side effects from these medications, and coffee can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb and use medications.

Medications for osteoporosisMedicines such as risedronate or ibandronate prevent and treat osteoporosis. However, their effectiveness will decrease if taken at the same time as coffee.

Antidepressants. Some drugs, such as fluvoxamine, amitriptyline, escitalopram, and imipramine, may be metabolized differently if you drink coffee at the same time, especially if you have a lot of it. Studies show that fluvoxamine increases common side effects of caffeine (fast heart rate, insomnia).

Antipsychotic drugs. Medications that treat psychosis include phenothiazines, clozapine, haloperidol, and olanzapine. Coffee can interfere with the absorption of these medications. Research shows that many of these medications are metabolized or broken down differently in the body in the presence of coffee.

Blood pressure medicationsDrugs such as felodipine may be less absorbed when taken with coffee.

Melatonin. The thing is, caffeine does the opposite: it makes you feel alert. As a result, you may have a hard time falling asleep after drinking coffee. Drinking coffee can suppress your body’s production of melatonin, reducing the hormone’s effectiveness. Caffeine and melatonin can also neutralize each other.
