The Siberian State University of Telecommunications and Informatics (SibGUTI), a major university of the Ministry of Digital Development outside the Urals, is preparing to launch a test site to test a domestic system capable of detecting a person’s location indoors using Wi-Fi – with an accuracy of 5-7 meters. According to Rector Yuri Zazuli, the first test results are planned to be received by the end of 2024.

The university noted that similar systems on the Russian market are mostly represented by foreign developments that are difficult to approve in Russia. The new system, developed by SibGUTI scientists under a government contract with the Ministry of Digital Development, is software that allows you to track the location of mobile devices in the Wi-Fi network inside buildings. This technology can be used to find people in buildings, underground areas, and in large buildings for parental control and guidance, especially for people with disabilities.

Associate Professor of the Department of Information Communication Systems and Networks (ICSS) at SibGUTI Anatoly Kostyukovich said that the pilot zone will be located on the first floor of the university’s fifth building, where important events such as admission campaigns and conferences are held. Event participants will be able to install a special application that will indicate their location in the building. A permanent pilot zone will help improve the system’s accuracy, demonstrate its capabilities to potential users and partners, and prepare the technology for scaling.
