Samsung had shown at CES 2024 a 3D monitor that works without the need for special glasses. This Wednesday (21) the South Korean company confirmed the launch of the Samsung Odyssey 3D, the first gaming monitor in this category that does not require glasses to view content.
Available in 27 and 37-inch sizes, the Odyssey 3D runs at 4K resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate and a response time of just 1ms. The display uses LFD technology, which is responsible for creating 3D images from 2D content using a lenticular lens.
This type of lens allows different images to be sent to each eye, which is combined with a camera integrated into the device. The camera uses View Mapping and Eye Tracking to transmit the image and provide the stereoscopic 3D effect. In fact, this technique is very similar to what Acer has been doing for a while with its SpatialLabs series of products for professional use.
Refined design
The Samsung Odyssey 3D maintains the refined design standard that the company has adopted for its high-end products. The device has a minimalist base with height adjustment that also allows the screen to swivel. On the back, there is a DisplayPort 1.4 connector and two HDMI 2.1 ports.
The long-forgotten 3D craze seems to be returning to the hardware sector with a vengeance. The feature is quite interesting for viewing projects and movies, but has yet to gain traction in the gaming world.
The Samsung Odyssey 3D is expected to be released by the end of the year, but there is no word yet on its price.
