Microsoft argues in a filing with the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that Apple’s revised guidelines, including those issued in January, March and April, continue to pose significant hurdles to the launch of its own Xbox Cloud Gaming app on iOS.
Microsoft’s objections relate to various App Store rules that it says prevent cloud gaming apps from being distributed and operated. Key issues include Apple’s 30 percent commission on in-app purchases (IAPs), which Microsoft says “makes it economically impractical to effectively monetize the service.” Additionally, Apple’s restriction on subscription and purchase links outside of the iOS app further complicates cloud gaming services.
The CMA is exploring possible measures to address these issues, such as allowing cloud gaming applications to run in read-only mode or allowing these services to use their own payment systems.
