Billionaire Elon Musk posted a live stream on social media of the launch of Polaris Dawn, which will carry out the first private spacewalk. The spacecraft has now entered orbit, the company later said.

“Launch into orbit has been confirmed,” the post says.

The launch of the Falcon 9 rocket with the Crew Dragon ship took place on September 10 at 12:23 Moscow time. About 12 minutes later, the ship, after separating from the second stage of the carrier, was to enter orbit.

Polaris Dawn is one of three planned missions in the Polaris program, which has received financial backing from billionaire CEO of Shift4 Payments Jared Isaacman. He is part of the mission team. Also on board are retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Scott Poteet and SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillies and Anna Menon. The first flight was initially planned for December 2021, but was long postponed. This time the spacewalk is planned for two hours and will take place at an altitude of 700 kilometers above Earth.

The tourists will spend five days in orbit. Their tasks include 36 scientific experiments on the effects of space and radiation on human health.

For more than two decades, Elon Musk has been working towards his lifelong goal: colonising Mars. And if at first he focused on how to overcome the distance to the planet, since a year ago he started to pay more attention to what will happen if he gets there.
