According to scientists, drinking coffee prevents the development of sarcopenia, a musculoskeletal disorder that reduces strength, muscle mass and performance as we age.
People who drank coffee every day had 11-13% more muscle mass. However, there was no significant relationship between coffee and muscle size among those who drank decaffeinated coffee.
Additionally, the association between coffee consumption and higher muscle mass disappeared in people with a body mass index over 30.
The study looked at health data for more than 8,300 American adults. Information was collected from 2011 to 2018. The average age of participants was around 40, and just over 50% were women.
But scientists stress that the study shows that drinking any amount of caffeinated coffee provides health benefits compared to drinking decaffeinated coffee, although it is unclear why this is the case.
