9to5Mac has looked into iOS 18 code and detailed information about the ProRAW JPEG-XL format in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.

The format also supports more modern standards such as transparency, HDR and a wider color gamut. Smartphones can take pictures in three variations:

• Lossless JPEG (most compatible)
• JPEG-XL lossy
• JPEG-XL lossless

The sizes of photographs in this format have also become known:

► JPEG-XL Lossy ProRAW at 12 MP: 11 MB
► JPEG-XL Lossless ProRAW at 12 MP: 18 MB
► JPEG-XL Lossy ProRAW at 48 MP: 20 MB
► JPEG-XL Lossless ProRAW at 48 MP: 46 MB

By comparison, a 48-megapixel ProRAW photo taken on an iPhone 15 Pro takes up about 75MB. [9to5]
