This research, led by Professor Molly Shoichet, uses ionizable drugs to simultaneously deliver small molecule interfering RNA (siRNA) and drugs to treatment-resistant cells. Using this method, it was possible to not only deliver siRNA effectively into cells, but also to enable simultaneous administration of active ionizable drugs.
siRNA plays an important role in medicine by shutting down genes responsible for disease, but delivering these molecules to cells without losing their activity remains a challenge. The new technique increases the stability and efficiency of siRNA delivery, allowing both RNA and drugs to leave endosomes and reach target cells.
