The company received construction permits in the capital Santiago in 2020 amid rising demand for server farms amid the rise of cloud computing and generative artificial intelligence. But after the permits were partially revoked by a Chilean court over water usage, Google decided to reassess the project.
The company said it would restart the process to comply with stricter environmental regulations and replace its water-consuming cooling system. Google said sustainability is at the core of everything it does, including the design and operation of its data centers.
