Avulsions, which can occur without warning, are distinct from traditional floods associated with particularly heavy rainfall. The study analyzed data from 174 river avalanches around the world and found that these events mostly occur near mountain ridges and coastlines, where sediments accumulate rapidly. The scientists say the researchers have developed “escape corridors” that predict potential new river courses, an important tool for governments and planners in flood-prone areas.
