He said Telegram’s search function is more powerful than other messaging apps, allowing users to find public channels and bots. It is sometimes used by those who violate the terms of service.
“Over the past few weeks, a dedicated team of moderators using artificial intelligence has made Telegram search much safer. All problematic content we found in search is no longer available. If you still manage to find something unsafe or illegal in Telegram search, please let us know via @SearchReport,” Durov wrote.
The messenger has updated its terms of service and privacy policy, making them uniform across the world. IP addresses and phone numbers of offenders can now be disclosed to law enforcement in response to reasonable legal requests.
Durov believes that such measures will scare off criminals and reminded that the purpose of Telegram search is to find friends and news, not to promote illegal products.
“We will not allow attackers to compromise the integrity of our platform for nearly a billion users,” he concluded.
In early September, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced on his channel that the number of paid subscribers to the messenger had reached 10 million people. He also introduced new features and talked about the phasing out of several legacy functions.
