The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) and experts are studying the problem of greenwashing and pseudo-green products, Deputy Director of the Federal Antimonopoly Service Karina Taukenova told Izvestia.

According to her, the regulator analyzes these practices and makes appropriate recommendations. The FAS collaborates with experts to analyze such practices and prepares recommendations that will be presented at the meeting of the expert council, Karina Taukenova noted.

He added that some products claim to be natural, ecological or organic when in reality they do not meet those criteria. FAS is of the opinion that if the manufacturer cannot confirm such characteristics, then the product should not have such designations.

Taukenova believes that it is important to put an end to these cases, as they distort the market situation and mislead consumer expectations.

According to surveys, 59% of Russians are ready to give preference to environmentally friendly products.

  • In August 2023, environmental spending by Russian companies increased by 12% over the year and exceeded one trillion rubles for the first time. Among the regions, the Krasnoyarsk Territory incurred the highest costs, and almost 70% of the money spent on environmental protection is current operating costs.
  • UES Director General Andrey Goloshchapov warned against blindly believing labels, as this could be greenwashing. The expert also talked about how to detect eco-imposters.
