Microsoft has discontinued the HoloLens 2 mixed reality headset, first introduced in 2019. Updates for the device will continue to ship until the end of 2027, after which support will stop. The company reported this to UploadVR.

The first HoloLens model, which launched in 2016, will end support on December 10, 2024. Microsoft intends to focus on its partnership with Meta*, which brought the Xbox Cloud Gaming and Microsoft Office web apps to the Quest headset VR.
According to UploadVR, the division that worked on HoloLens experienced major layoffs in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, Microsoft said they were considering launching HoloLens 3, but development of the device was canceled.
The cost of HoloLens 2 started at 3.5 thousand dollars, the headset was intended for use in organizations, for example, in the manufacturing industry and healthcare. As of February 2021, 15 surgeons from 13 countries performed orthopedic surgeries using the device.
*Meta is recognized as an extremist organization and is banned in Russia.
