South Korean writer Han Gang won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature for her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical trauma and exposes the fragility of human life.” This is stated in a press release on the Nobel Committee website.

The report states that Gan has a “unique understanding of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead.” The Nobel Committee also highlighted that the writer, with her poetic and experimental style, became an innovator of modern prose.

Han Gang is 53 years old and teaches creative writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts. In 2016 he received the Booker Prize for his novel The Vegetarian.
