Scientists studied the mycelium that breaks down wood and how the mycelium responds to different spatial arrangements of wooden blocks. In the “cross” arrangement the mushrooms formed denser connections around the outer blocks. Scientists say they serve as strategic “outposts” for mining. By contrast, in a circular arrangement the links were evenly distributed, and a noticeable lack of growth in the center indicated the lack of benefit of expanding into an “already saturated area”.

These results suggest that fungi exchange information through their extensive networks and adjust their growth patterns depending on the environment.
