X5 Group has removed marshmallows with maltitol (a sugar substitute) from sale in Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and in the Vprok.ru online hypermarket, the retailer’s press service told RBC. Previously, the Mash Telegram channel wrote that buyers of these retail chains complained of being poisoned by Giselle marshmallows.

X5 Group clarified that no complaints about marshmallows with maltitol syrup, including Giselle, were recorded on the hotline, website or other feedback channels.
At the same time, due to customer complaints, all sales of marshmallows with maltitol in Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and Vprok.ru were suspended “until all circumstances are clarified.” The X5 Group said products cannot be picked up at the checkout or ordered in the app, and balances in store warehouses and distribution centers are also blocked for sale.

On October 12, Mash reported a mass poisoning of Vkusville customers who ate Classic brand marshmallows.

A representative for the retailer said the poisoning information was not true. The company highlighted that maltitol is a legally permitted additive and that the marshmallow has passed all routine laboratory tests. Vkusville promised to send new marshmallow samples for unscheduled studies to confirm their safety.

On October 15, Mash reported that “dozens” of Pyaterochka and Perekrestok customers complained of being poisoned by Giselle marshmallows. According to the Telegram channel, “Giselle” and “Classic” are produced at the same plant in Dmitrov, near Moscow.
