Sberbank has found a way to solve the shortage of chips – they will be re-implanted from old, non-activated cards to new ones. This was stated by Olga Maklashina, Executive Director, Head of the Bank’s Cyber Compliance Department, at the Paymentsecurity conference on payment security.

Sberbank began to “select” tokens from unactivated cards to insert them into new ones

According to her, there is now a shortage of chips in Russia, despite the fact that their manufacturers have not left the Russian market. The price has also increased.

“Our colleagues from the issuing center came up with an almost brilliant solution: the re-implantation of bank card chips, that is, we started “taking out” chips from cards and inserting them into new cards,” Maklashina said (quoted by RIA Novosti). .

For these purposes, only those cards that have not been activated will be used, that is, that customers have not taken them. Before the procedure, the data on the chip is removed.

Every month, the bank accumulates around 375,000 unactivated cards; relocation will allow Sberbank to save 1 billion rubles this year.
