Jatupat, known as Pai Dao Din, claimed that Pegasus was used against him three times during protests in 2021 calling for government reform and control of the Thai monarchy. Research by organizations such as Citizen Lab and iLaw had previously reported that Pegasus targeted 35 Thai activists and academics between 2020-2021.
Jatupat criticized the decision, arguing that the security of the state takes precedence over individual freedoms.
NSO Group, which licenses Pegasus to government institutions for the purpose of combating terrorism and preventing crimes, did not comment on the issue.
The Thai government admitted to using Pegasus for security purposes but did not directly respond to the activists’ accusations.
