The innovative data storage system uses fluorescent void centers within the diamond to store data. By firing ultrafast laser pulses at small pieces of diamond, the researchers create “empty spaces,” or empty spaces in the diamond lattice that serve as data storage units. These empty spaces can store information at 2,000 times the density of standard Blu-ray.

The technology has impressive durability and is capable of storing data maintenance-free for millions of years. In tests, the system successfully encoded and retrieved images with 99% accuracy; This proved its usefulness for long-term data storage.
