The modified Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine was given intravenously, and researchers found that it provided better protection than the standard vaccine. None of the monkeys given the self-destructing vaccine developed pneumonia following tuberculosis infection. Additionally, six of the eight monkeys and two of the eight monkeys that received the standard vaccine were free of tuberculosis bacteria.
The new vaccine is expected to be a safer and more effective option, especially for people with weak immune systems.
