The department believes that the number of tourists has increased due to the weakening of the yen, as well as the increase in the number of flights from Asian countries, including China.

The trend was facilitated by an increase in the number of tourists from China and South Korea. The number of the former has almost doubled compared to 2023, to approximately 7 million, but this figure is 27.2% lower than the 2019 figure before the pandemic.

Previously, Japanese authorities had set a goal of receiving 60 million foreign tourists annually by 2030, Bloomberg noted. Around 3.5 million people visited the state in December 2024 alone, The Japan Times writes.

Additionally, the Japan National Tourism Organization shared data on tourist spending in the country. In 2024 they spent $51 billion, 53.4% more than in 2023 and 69.1% more than in 2019.

Chinese tourists spend the most money, accounting for up to 21.3% of all expenses by foreigners visiting Japan. Also among the top five spending leaders were tourists from Taiwan, South Korea, the United States and Hong Kong.

The day before, Kommersant, citing representatives of travel agencies, wrote that the demand among Russians for tourist and business visas for Asian countries in 2024 has grown significantly and is several times higher than the interest for visas from Schengen countries.
