“As we want to reject passwords using things as access keys (Keys Passkeys, authentication technology using a Key-Rb.RU cryptographic), we want to refuse to send SMS messages for authentication,” Richendrfer said.
Why is SMS bad? According to Richendrfer, SMS codes have security problems: they can be false, users do not always have access to the device to which SMS reaches, and the safety of SMS codes always depends on a particular telecommunications operator. Now Google uses SMS automation to verify account safety and fight against abuse, for example, with spam propagation.
The Gmail representative said that SMS authentication will be replaced by QR codes in the coming months, the user must scan the QR code using the camera on the device.
- At the end of September, the Mincifers reported that Google limited the possibility of registering new accounts in Russia. RB.RU was convinced that Google does not allow her to create an account for the Russian telephone number.
- Later, the company said they know about problems registering accounts in Russia and that they are working to solve it. Google also said they intend to maintain access to their free services for Russians.
