Russian billionaires Roman Abramovich and Alisher Usmanov are challenging the legality of personal sanctions in the European Court, and The Wall Street Journal has learned details of the businessmen’s lawsuits against EU authorities.

The details of Abramovich and Usmanov’s lawsuits against the EU became known

The publication writes that Abramovich points to a violation of his civil rights (and he is a citizen of Portugal, which is part of the EU) and demands that the EU authorities pay compensation of $1 million to his charitable foundation, founded after the sale. of Chelsea.

Usmanov in the lawsuit highlights that the financial consequences of the sanctions have led to the failure of several businesses, threaten the bankruptcy of three of his companies and affect the lives of employees and their families.

He also reads that the EU authorities should pay him about $20,000 to cover his expenses.

In addition to Abramovich and Usmanov, other big businessmen from the Russian Federation, for example, Mikhail Fridman and Petr Aven, also file lawsuits in the European Court.

They are all asking the court to lift the sanctions, saying their rights have been violated and denying accusations by Western governments of having close ties to the Kremlin.

Appeals and supporting documents have been received in all the cases since April, but the court has yet to schedule hearings on the petitions.

Legal experts cited by the WSJ believe that this legal fight is more symbolic than pragmatic.

They are unlikely to win anything for the business, even assuming their claims are met.

Recall that Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the Chelsea football club due to sanctions. Petr Aven and Mikhail Fridman hastily left Alfa-Bank's board of directors in early March.
