The report states that the attacks started in 2022 at the latest. Hackers allegedly gained access to the center’s internal data and employees’ personal devices by using a security vulnerability in the messenger of one of the foreign smartphone brands. Additionally, attempts to hack internal networks and high-precision time synchronization systems were recorded in 2023-2024.

The National Time Service is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is responsible for establishing and disseminating the national time standard.

The US Embassy in Beijing did not confirm the allegations but said Chinese hackers were running large-scale campaigns targeting US and international telecommunications companies.
