An international research team has tested the DNA of teeth taken from hundreds of human remains. Using the reconstructed genomes, the scientists were able to determine that all variations of modern strains of the herpes virus date back to the late Neolithic, early Bronze Age. Scientists were somewhat surprised by this, because it was assumed that herpes was something that had evolved with humans for a very long time.

Researchers have proposed two theories to explain the spread of herpes. The first is based on the fact that there was a great migration from Eurasia to Europe about 5000 years ago. Second: people started kissing each other.
