The researchers found that to get more sugar as a reward, the bumblebees were able to alter their response to painful stimuli.

One of the study’s authors noted that “in the past, insects were considered simple reflex automatons that responded to stimuli only with withdrawal reflexes.” The new study also showed that bumblebees’ responses were more flexible.
