A recent randomized controlled trial showed that regular consumption of sucralose and saccharin can alter the gut microbiome and increase the body’s response to sugar. So the sweeteners changed the composition of the microbes in the gut and their glucose tolerance was impaired.

Meanwhile, other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and stevia did not have the same effect. However, recent studies have shown that people who drink aspartame-sweetened diet soda are twice as likely to be obese than non-drinkers.
