At this point in life, no one doubts the power of 3D printers anymore, right? We’ve seen here before that it’s possible to make a human skull from a 3D mold, create new medicines, produce mini-livers, produce endless “delicious” bacon, and even help helpless animals. Now these machines have reached a new level: solving the watery ketchup problem.

We’re not talking about that questionable quality product, but the watery slurry from the first squeeze of the ketchup bottle. Whether it’s pastels, coxinha, pizza or burgers, the first spritz of ketchup is always “weak and gross.” With that in mind, North Liberty High students Jonathan Thompson and Tyler Richards came up with a very clever solution: a new cover.

Students are part of the “Lead the Way” project involving more than 5,000 North American schools. In it, students test their knowledge and develop new skills that include science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The goal suggested by the teachers was simple: students should find a solution to something that directly affects their lives.

The end of juicy ketchup has been announced

After scanning tons of patents and conducting extensive research, Richards and Thompson developed around 60 possible cover designs. They then chose the “mushroom” design. This is based on Pythagoras’ glass, which can only be filled to a certain height and filled before its contents are poured onto the circle.

Made using a 3D printer, the prototype looks like a regular cap from a squeezable ketchup bottle, except for the part of the cap that looks like an inverted cork at the bottom. According to the creators of the mechanism, it is not possible for ketchup to pass through the end of the cork.

In this way, the pressure causes the liquid to push the barrier and overwhelm it. In this way, the water stays in the small base of the lid and the ketchup comes out silently. It’s that simple. No more juicy coxinha or tomato juice pastels. Did you like the invention? What other elements would you like to create with a 3D printer?
