The total amount of funds stolen by fraudsters from bank customers in the second quarter of 2022 decreased by 14% compared to the first quarter, from 3 billion rubles to 2.8 billion rubles, according to Bank of Russia materials. . Compared to April-June 2021, the amount also decreased by 5.5%.

Bank fraudsters reduced their activity in the second quarter

The regulator explains such dynamics by a decrease in the activity of cyber scammers from the end of February to April inclusive. However, since May, the Central Bank has again seen an increase in the number of calls and emails from hackers.

  • The number of transactions without customer consent also decreased in the second quarter: 10.8% compared to the same period a year ago and 18% compared to the first quarter, to 211,263.
  • The proportion of thefts using social engineering methods remains significant, but also decreased in April-June to 44.8% from 52.5% in the first quarter and 47% in the second quarter of 2021.
  • Compared to the second quarter of last year, the number of robberies at ATMs or terminals increased by 59%, from 20,371 to 32,396 cases. However, in relation to the first quarter, the growth is not so significant: about 9%.
  • Above all, fraudsters traditionally manage to steal through mobile banking: in the second quarter, 1.8 billion rubles, of which 74.3% was made using the method of social engineering.
