The State Duma will soon present a bill to mitigate criminal penalties for companies for non-payment of taxes. Amendments to the codes were prepared by deputies and senators.

Russia plans to mitigate criminal sanctions on companies for non-payment of taxes

The initiators of the innovations propose to transfer such crimes to the category of moderate severity, as well as to close the criminal case if the debt is paid, Izvestia learned.

The new rules also provide for:

  • reduce the maximum prison sentence that can be imposed on those convicted of tax evasion from six to five years;
  • reduction from seven to five years of the maximum penalty for concealment of a large amount of money and property.

Experts believe the rules will be adopted, as President Vladimir Putin in July instructed the Cabinet of Ministers and the Supreme Court to decriminalize certain offenses committed by businessmen. He also proposed reconsidering the grounds for arresting businessmen.

In early August, the Ministry of Justice proposed to abolish criminal penalties for doing business without registering. It is also proposed to exclude three economic articles from the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The initiative contributes to the improvement of the business climate, according to the department.
