In particular, scientists were interested in whether there was a link between past infectious diseases and the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. The authors focused on Alzheimer’s disease (292,000 patients), Parkinson’s disease (about 104,000), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (about 10,000 patients). Patients were compared with healthy people.
It was revealed that the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease increased in people who were hospitalized for infection within 5-20 years of making these diagnoses. Also, the nature of the infection did not matter.
