TikTok has long been on a course to ban political ads and is actively fighting disinformation online, and as a continuation of the topic it announced the mandatory verification of political accounts and a ban on the monetization of propaganda content and fees. promotional campaigns during the elections.

Updated TikTok Policies for Politicians

Blake Chandley, president of global solutions for TikTok, announced this in an official message on the social network page.

He pointed out that TikTok is an entertainment platform where people come to share their stories and understand other people’s experiences.

The stories themselves can deal with all aspects of life, including current events, elections, and political issues. But these should remain personal opinions and not channels to manipulate the conscience.

“As we’ve said before, we want to continue to develop policies that promote a positive environment that brings people together, not divides them,” Chandley said.

In order to remove malicious disinformation from the platform, it was decided to ban political advertising and make a number of policy changes regarding the accounts of government agencies, parties, individual politicians and everyone directly related to this address.

To this end, TikTok is expected to implement:

  • Account verification. Users need to know that the account being viewed is genuine. And if before the “Verified Account” badge was optional for political profiles, now the platform intends to test the mandatory verification of accounts belonging to governments, politicians and political parties.
  • Prohibition of fundraising for electoral campaigns. Content in any format is prohibited if it contains requests for funding: either a video requesting donations or a link to a donation site.
  • Prohibition of any monetization. TikTok has been banning political ads for a long time, but if it was about content before, the new restrictions go further and affect the account itself. Political accounts will have access to the advertising functionality automatically disabled. Additionally, TikTok will prohibit political accounts from accessing other monetization features (gifts, tips, e-commerce, etc.).

The company understands that political organizations may still need access to advertising services: for example, to support public health and safety. And for this, TikTok came up with a compromise solution:

All services and companies related to relocation on a single map

“We will continue to allow government entities to advertise under limited conditions, and they will need to work with a TikTok representative.”

TikTok moves like this speak to an attempt to find a balance between allowing people to discuss topics that are relevant to their lives and protecting a creative and entertaining platform built for joy, not conflict.

All the innovations, therefore, will allow a more effective application of the current platform management policy.
