“Although there have been advances in the treatment of this disease in recent years, the development of new drugs is expensive and time consuming,” said lead researcher Peter Shepard. “As a possible solution to this problem, our group was investigating whether using old drugs in new ways could provide a faster and cheaper way to treat this disease.”
Scientists have researched several anti-cancer drugs whose patent will soon be revoked. When they combined two of these drugs, they found a significant increase in the overall effectiveness of bowel cancer treatment in laboratory studies. “Research in recent years has led to rapid growth in our understanding of how bowel cancer develops,” Shepard writes.
Next, the researchers plan to conduct a randomized controlled clinical trial.
