By taking 3D images of individual teeth and analyzing the patterns of markings on them, the researchers were able to determine which dinosaurs ate hard bones frequently and which regularly ate softer foods and prey.

The team studied a total of 48 teeth, 34 from theropod dinosaurs and 14 from crocodiles. Scientists were surprised that neither allosaurus nor tyrannosaurs showed signs of frequent bone-eating. Perhaps tyrannosaurus could eat bones, but it did so less frequently than previously thought. It also turned out that young dinosaurs were more likely to eat leftovers after adults.
