After the Twitter controversy involving Elon Musk and the banning of competing links, the market has made room for the growth of other solutions such as Koo, which already has 2.5 million users, and the open-source social network Mastodon. Recently, the Firefox browser and blogging platform Tumblr announced that they will soon be releasing their own open source platform versions.

According to the information announced by Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko, the network has grown from 300 thousand users to 2.5 million between October and November 2022. only two months.

Thanks to this, the move began to attract the attention of other players in this market, such as Mozilla, the developer of the Firefox browser, who showed interest in the possibility and announced that it would start running a community on Fediverso.

“Our aim is to contribute to the healthy and sustainable growth of a unified social space that not only functions, but thrives on its own terms, independently of profit- and control-oriented technology companies,” said Steve Teixeira, Chief Product Officer, Mozilla.

Tumblr has also made public its interest in running a community. According to the platform’s founder, Matt Mullenwegg, the network has recently received many new users and will implement interoperability functions “as soon as possible”.

How does it work?

In the “Fediverso” social networks, each community is an independent, decentralized server that can communicate with each other – each developed with its own rules. For example, Fediverso’s most popular community is mastodon.social, which offers a Twitter-like microblogging experience.

It’s like there are different social networks with different themes but they all use the same open source as the original Mastodon version. The protocol used is Activity Pub and it provides the opportunity to create interconnected platforms with different themes for each interest.

While Firefox and Tumblr are starting to pay attention to the trend, other companies are already jumping on the open source bandwagon. The Vivaldi browser, for example, has gained integration with Mastodon and allows you to easily create and use an account on the platform.
