Microsoft allowed Russians to download the Windows operating system

A “Windows Setup Wizard” is available for updating the software, as well as an image of the operating system itself for burning to DVD or USB media, Izvestia found.

Before this, Russian users loaded Windows via torrents. However, such assemblies are not secure and may contain, for example, viruses embedded in the operating system image, said Denis Kuskov, CEO of Telecom Daily.

  • Microsoft in early March suspended the sale of goods and the provision of services in Russia due to a special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, at the end of the month, the corporation announced that it would continue to do business in the country with clients not subject to sanctions, including schools and hospitals. The company refused to leave Russia completely.
  • In September, Microsoft banned Russians from upgrading computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11. When trying to download the downloader for the latest version of Windows, an empty browser window opened on the company’s official website.
  • In October, the Microsoft 365 office suite reappeared in the assortment of Russian stores. It has not been available since the end of March, when the American company officially suspended the supply of its products to Russia.
