Amazon managed to popularize Alexa personal assistant, via smart speakers. Both Echo Dot and Echo Show are helpful in addition to our daily tasks automate various devices in the home.
And to make things even simpler, Alexa-enabled smart speakers give different types of alerts that can be identified through the colors that appear on the devices. Each color or lighting pattern represents a different situation.
Below you can check the meaning of each of the colors. It mainly applies to Echo Dot models, which appear as a disk around the smart speaker. For the Echo Show, the warning lights follow the same pattern but are displayed in a bar at the bottom of the screen.
Yellow
The yellow color can appear quite often, depending on how much you use your Amazon devices.
Indicates that Alexa has a message or notification. It could be a note from someone else in your contacts, a notification about your Amazon purchase, or something like that.
Ask Alexa “What are my notifications?” to find out what it’s referring to. You just have to ask. or “What are my messages?”
cyan color on blue
The most common situation – and the one most users will encounter – is identified by the color blue with a small cyan accent.
It shows up when you activate your Alexa and it listens to you. The light ring (or bar in the case of Echo Shows) will flash briefly, indicating that Alexa has heard it and is waiting for a command.
Another situation where the blue light flashes quickly is when the device has received a software update.
Red
Every time you mute your Alexa’s microphone, your Echo will display solid red. In this case, nothing you say will be recognized by your device until you enable the microphone again and the red light goes out.
If you have an Echo Show, the red bar indicates the camera is disabled.
blue color rotation
Every time you plug your Echo into an outlet, the teal and blue colors will slowly turn. They indicate that the device is booting. However, this pattern only happens on smart speakers that are already configured.
Orange
The color that will be displayed when you turn on your device for the first time during setup is orange. This color will also appear when you need to reset or your Echo is trying to connect to the internet.
Green
Another color that can appear with some frequency is green. When this light is flashing, it means you have an incoming call to the device.
While on a call, the light stops blinking and starts spinning on the Echo Dot. This also happens when you have a Drop In call, a feature that lets you connect certain devices like an intercom with Alexa.
Purple
You can set your device to Do Not Disturb mode via the Amazon Alexa app. When you do this, a purple light will turn on for a few seconds, indicating that it has entered this mode.
The purple light may also appear during the initial setup of the device. If so, your Echo is having trouble connecting to your Wi-Fi network.
White
Finally, the white light indicates the volume of your Echo, the level when you turn it on manually or command for a certain volume.
