The FAA said in a statement that the issue occurred with Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM), a service that shows pilots real-time airport statuses. The communication program notifies you of runway conditions, equipment outages, potential hazards and other important details before an aircraft takes off or lands.
The problem was reported at around 9 a.m. (Brasília time), when the FAA made it public that it had “ordered airlines to suspend all domestic flights.” Nearly 3,000 flights were affectedIt creates queues, long waiting times and some chaos at the country’s airports.

resumption of flights
The operator has requested that all flights be suspended so tests can be conducted to re-enable NOTAM and verify the information it has captured. Only military and medical rescue flights were allowed during the suspension period.
A little over an hour later, at around 10 am, the FAA announced that all planes flying across the US were able to land normally. According to the organization, pilots already in the air were able to verify the information before the NOTAM error.
Around 11:00 am, the FAA announced the gradual resumption of departures at airports such as Newark Liberty International (New York) and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International (Georgia).
Update 5: Normal air traffic operations across the US are gradually resuming after an overnight outage of the Notice to Air Missions system, which provides safety information to flight crews. The floor stop has been removed.
We continue to investigate the cause of the first problem

Cyber attack?
THEM The cause of the malfunction that paralyzed the US weather system could not be determined. and continues to be investigated by FAA experts. For now there is no clue as to what caused the failures, but some hypotheses have already been cast aside.
“Minister [Joe Biden] The FAA was informed of the system outage this morning by the Minister of Transportation. No evidence of cyber attack currently, but the President has instructed the DOT [Departamento de Transportes] “To conduct a full investigation into the causes,” said US Secretary of Communications Karine Jean-Pierre.

[Atualização – 11/01/2023, às 12h20]: An FAA update has reported that more than 10,000 flights have actually had problems. The number has grown exponentially as international flights (between cancellations and delays) were also affected by the NOTAM error.
European airports were also damaged due to the international impact. Flights from Madrid and Paris to the USA had to be suspended. Passengers used Twitter to show the situation at airports.
