Ozon and Wildberries were required to withdraw the counterfeit Cheburashkas from sale. Soyuzmultfilm, which owns the exclusive rights to the character, believes that any use of the images must be within the law.
The Soyuzmultfilm film studio asked the Wildberries and Ozon markets to withdraw Cheburashka toys from sale, which they considered to be counterfeit products. RBC writes about this with reference to the study’s statement.
The film “Cheburashka”, which was released on January 1, 2023, became the absolute record holder for the distribution of Russian films. According to the Cinema Fund, the total box office of the Russian film exceeded 3.52 billion rubles.
Against the background of commercial success, the demand for books, toys and other products related to Cheburashka has grown considerably. For example, the demand for the story “Crocodile Gena and his friends” in Ozon in January of this year increased by 47% year-on-year.
Soyuzmultfilm, which has had exclusive rights to use Cheburashka’s image since August 2019, demanded that Ozon and Wildberries remove counterfeit products from sale and called for use of the character within the law.
