67,688 people aged 25 to 74 years participated in the study. Researchers have found that symptoms of psychological distress are associated with a 17-24% increased risk of dementia. Symptoms of psychological distress included fatigue, depressed mood, and anxiety.

Scientists concluded that all these are risk factors for the development of dementia. However, they cannot prove a causal relationship.
