Two Chinese nationals were sentenced to 57 and 54 months in prison for defrauding Apple of more than US$2.5 million.
From July 2017 to December 2019, Haotian Sun, Pengfei Xue and their messages Wen Jin Gao and Dian Luo created fake iPhones for new ones under the program to replace broken devices. During this time, they exchanged 6 thousand fake smartphones.
The Chinese’s goal was “unlawful enrichment,” court documents say. To do this, they sent gadgets from Hong Kong to the mailboxes of a commercial mail receiving agency at UPS locations in the United States. The men use their driver’s licenses and student IDs to set up mailboxes. Apple provided replacement iPhones through carriers including FedEx, DHL and UPS.
As a result, the Chinese resold the resulting devices and turned to them for the proceeds, which they then divided among themselves.
Outside of the prison term, the men must pay the company more than $1 million and nearly $400,000 in damages. [The Register]
