The founder of the London-based trading company XTX Markets, billionaire Alexander Gerko, topped the list of businessmen who paid the most taxes to the British treasury (The Tax List 2023). The list was compiled by The Sunday Times.
Over 12 months, the 43-year-old businessman paid £487 million ($602.8 million) in UK tax, or £1.5 million ($1.8 million) per day, according to the publication.
Gerko moved to second place the leader of the rankings of the last three years: the founder of the international bookmaker Bet365 Denise Coates (paid £460.2 million, or $569.6 million) and her family. The top three, along with her family, also include Pentland Group co-owner and director Stephen Rubin (£392.3m or $485.7m), a company specializing in the production of sporting goods.
Alexander Gerko was born in Moscow and received his PhD in Mathematics from Moscow State University. Gerko has British citizenship, the publication also reports that he recently renounced Russian.
The billionaire began his career trading stocks at Deutsche Bank, then worked at hedge fund GSA Capital and in 2015 created his own trading company, XTX Markets. His business specializes in high-frequency trading based on algorithms and uses statistical models that analyze trading data.
According to Bloomberg, as of December 2022, Gerko’s net worth is $6 billion. In the UK, she invests in a number of projects to improve mathematics teaching. The Sunday Times calls the billionaire an outspoken critic of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.
