The Japanese company Uniqlo may finally leave the Russian Federation, a source in the real estate market told Kommersant.
The clothing manufacturer and seller suspended its operations in the Russian Federation in the spring of 2022 due to the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. In January, Izvestia wrote that Uniqlo would close almost all stores in Russia, leaving just five outlets.
Now it is reported that the company has terminated leases in some shopping centers and informed its employees about it. According to another interlocutor of the publication, Uniqlo planned to leave the country in the fall.
The head of the CORE.XP retail department, Marina Malakhatko, pointed out the inconvenience of paying more for rent for the premises of the Uniqlo store, since the political situation is not conducive to the resumption of the brand. According to her, the final departure was inevitable.
Sela or Gloria Jeans could replace Uniqlo in the Russian market, says Anna Lebsak-Kleymans, CEO of Fashion Consulting Group. However, this will not be easy due to the pricing policy and the quality of the Japanese manufacturer’s items.
