“Canadian and US planes were lifted into the air and a US F-22 successfully shot down the object,” Trudeau said.
The object, which was dropped on Saturday, was first seen over Alaska on Friday evening, a Pentagon spokesman said. Two F-22 fighter jets “followed” the object, with the help of the Alaska Air National Guard, “following it closely and taking the time to determine the nature of the object.” The surveillance continued until the object passed Canadian airspace. “An American F-22 shot down an object using an AIM 9X missile on Canadian soil,” a US Department of Defense spokesperson said in a statement.
The countries do not yet know who the object belongs to and whether it is linked to the Chinese “spy bubble”.
